Atascadero

Atascadero

Atascadero sits in the hills of North County, about halfway between Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo, and it has a story unlike any other town on the Central Coast. Founded in 1913 by publisher E.G. Lewis as a planned utopian colony, the city still carries that original DNA: wide open spaces, large lots, protected oak woodlands, and a genuine small town feel. The historic Italian Renaissance style City Hall, a California Historical Landmark, anchors a downtown locals call the Colony District.

Things to Do

  • Visit the Central Coast Zoo. The only AZA accredited zoo on the Central Coast, set in the wooded Atascadero Lake Park. Home to around a hundred species, including red pandas, with seasonal paddleboat rentals on the lake.
  • See historic City Hall and Sunken Gardens. The landmark 1918 administration building faces the Sunken Gardens, a historic downtown park that hosts the concert series, the annual Tamale Festival, Winter Wonderland, and the weekly farmers market.
  • Stroll Atascadero Lake Park. A mile long lakeside walking path, picnic areas, playgrounds, and the Pavilion on the Lake, which hosts community events.
  • Shop and dine in the Colony District. Downtown centers on historic City Hall and Sunken Gardens, with local restaurants, coffee shops, wine bars, breweries, and boutiques.
  • Pay respects at the Faces of Freedom Veterans Memorial. A moving tribute to local service members, and a point of pride for the community.
  • Hike Stadium Park. Trails and vistas in the hills west of Highway 101, a quiet and uncrowded spot for a walk or bike ride.
  • Explore Three Bridges Oak Preserve. A 100 acre open space on the west side with hiking, cycling, and equestrian trails through oak forest.
  • Play a round at Chalk Mountain Golf Course. A local favorite tucked into the oak studded hills.
