Edna Valley

Edna Valley

Edna Valley is San Luis Obispo County’s cool-climate wine country, a rolling patchwork of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vineyards tucked between San Luis Obispo and Arroyo Grande, about ten minutes from downtown SLO. Recognized as an American Viticultural Area, the valley holds fewer than three dozen wineries, most of them small, family owned, and refreshingly unpretentious. Tasting rooms line Orcutt Road and the quiet back roads off Highway 227, and on any given afternoon you are likely to end up chatting with the winemaker over a glass. If Paso Robles does bold reds, Edna Valley does elegant whites, all ocean breeze and golden light.

Things to Do

  • Taste along Orcutt Road. The spine of the valley holds a string of tasting rooms: Chamisal, the valley’s pioneering winery; Baileyana, set on the lawn of a historic early-1900s schoolhouse with bocce ball courts; Wolff Vineyards, with a terrace overlooking 125 acres of vines; and Saucelito Canyon, pouring old-vine Zinfandel from vines first planted in 1880.
  • Visit Tolosa. Named for Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, this architectural standout on Edna Road offers seated tastings, vineyard excursions, and an outdoor tasting area made for lingering.
  • Stop at Biddle Ranch. Five generations of farming on one property. The vineyard tasting room pours estate wines, and every fall the ranch’s pumpkin patch grows more than 60 pumpkin varieties with a corn maze and u-pick.
  • See the new EDNA. The historic Edna Valley Vineyard site on Biddle Ranch Road was reimagined as EDNA, a collaborative space with a tasting room, craft distillery, and local market, all with a view of Islay Peak.
  • Drive Price Canyon Road. Meander from Pismo Beach through rich farmland and vineyard-covered hills, with oak-studded views the whole way.
  • Book a private tasting at Center of Effort. By appointment only, for a deeper dive into small-lot winemaking on Corbett Canyon Road.

  • Islay Peak views: The volcanic peak watches over the valley; catch it from the EDNA tasting room grounds.

  • Tolosa: Outdoor tasting with food service, built for long lunches among the vines.
  • Baileyana: Pack a picnic for the schoolhouse lawn, with bocce ball on the side.
  • EDNA: The on-site market pairs with the tasting room for local flavors in one stop.
